What If My Application is not Successful?

If you have applied from outside Australia, the decision not to grant you a visa cannot be reviewed. If you have applied in Australia, you may apply for review of the decision not to grant a visa

Can Family Members Accompany Me?

Family members may accompany you and may apply for a visa on your application. They must undergo a medical examination and hold health cover insurance. If they decide to come to Australia after you have arrived, they will have to apply separately.

Can I Work?

Students and their dependants applying for student visas for the first time will not be automatically granted permission to work in Australia. Students and their dependants will only be able to apply for a visa with work rights after they arrive in Australia and the student has commenced their course of study. The charge is $50. Students are limited to 20 hours work per week while their education provider is in session; they may work full-time during holiday periods.

What is Meant by a Registered Course?

A registered course is an education or training course offered by an Australian education provider registered with the Australian Government to offer courses to overseas students. The Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs web site provides more information about registered courses.

Can My Family Visit Me in Australia?

Parents and family members wishing to visit students in Australia must obtain a tourist visa.

Can I Change Education Providers?

From 1 December 1998, students must remain with the education provider with whom they originally enrolled for at least the first 12 months of their course unless they get permission from the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs to transfer. A transfer will only be allowed in exceptional circumstances. There is an application charge of $120 except when a student has to change because the education provider is no longer able to provide the course.

You can change your course but before doing so you must notify the nearest office of the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs.

Can I Extend my Stay in Australia. If So, How?

You can extend your stay in Australia. You will have to apply for a new visa before your current visa expires. To extend your student visa without changing the conditions of your visa, you must apply to the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs

Can I Leave Australia and Re-enter?

You can leave Australia and re-enter but you should ensure that you hold a valid visa. If you leave without a visa allowing re-entry, you will need to reapply overseas, pay the charge and meet the current visa requirements.
