ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

If you are seeking a degree from an Australian University, you may be required to take the TOEFL. The Test of English as a Foreign Language is a standardized test required of non-native English speaking students. Several ESL programs are designed specifically to help you prepare for the TOEFL.

There are two versions of the test, a written one and a computer-based one. The Written Test The written test is made up of three sections of multiple choice questions.

1.The first section, Listening Comprehension, is designed to test your understanding of spoken English. For each question or group of questions, you will hear a recorded conversation or speech. Each question has four possible answers, you must choose the one that makes the most sense.

2.The Structure and Written Expression section is designed to test your knowledge of English grammar and sentence structure. You will be asked to select the correct word or group of words to complete the given sentence.

3.Your understanding of written English is tested in the Reading Comprehension section of the TOEFL. After reading a short passage, you will be required to answer a series of questions based on what you just read. Once again, each question has four possible answers.

On some test dates, the TOEFL is offered in conjunction with the Test of Written English or TWE. This test basically requires you to write a short essay demonstrating your knowledge of English composition. The TWE is scored separately from the TOEFL. The Computer-Based Test The computer-based test was created to make the test more accessible throughout the world. It is made up of 4 parts: Listening, Structure, Reading and Writing and is multiple choice as well. The first three parts correspond to their counterparts in the written version. The Writing section is much like the TWE - requires that you write an essay - only it is scored as part of the TOEFL test and is mandatory for all test-takers.
